a Microsoft Word count lesson

You have to turn in a 500-word essay. The thought of counting each and every word makes your eyes bug out! Is there a better way to get a word count?

Open Microsoft Word and begin a new document. Type a paragraph.
Click on Tools found in the Menu Bar.
Move your mouse down to Word Count and click there.
Notice the other information given in the chart.
If you want to know how many words are in a particular part of your document highlight that area, then use the Word Count tool. Try it with one sentence in your paragraph.

With our newer version of Microsoft Word, a Word Count Toolbar is also available. Give it a try using these steps:

  1. Click View found in the Menu Bar.
  2. Move your cursor down the menu to Toolbars and across the arrow leading to the submenu.
  3. Continue moving along the submenu until you reach Word Count. Click.
  4. The Word Count toolbar is placed in view on your screen. It can be moved if needed by dragging the title bar. Reposition it if needed.
  5. Continue typing to add more words to your document.
  6. Click the Recount button on the Word Count toolbar to see the new total.
