By the end of the school year we can...

Use a computer mouse to click, double-click, right click, and drag & drop. 
Understand when to click, double-click, or right click.

Identify the parts of a computer:  keyboard, numeric keypad, monitor, tower, mouse, scrolling button, mouse pad, floppy drive, floppy disk, CD-ROM drive, CD, hard drive, speakers, microphone, volume controls, power buttons, printer, scanner, and AverKey.
Understand the difference between hardware and software.

Identify the parts of the keyboard - Enter (Return), Space Bar, Back Space, Numeric Keypad, Caps Lock, Num Lock. Escape, Tab, Shift, Control, Alt., Delete, Arrow Keys, and Print Screen (Grades 5+).
Use proper keyboarding skills (Grades 2+)

Demonstrate proper care of the parts of the computer plus floppy disks and CDs.

Identify the desktop, task bar, start menu, system tray, icons and shortcuts - and understand the difference.

Locate, open, and close (and/or exit) programs using icons (shortcuts) and the Start Menu, and log-in when necessary.

Save work to the hard drive, floppy drive, CDs and jump (flash, thumb) drives, and network. Understand differences with each saving location. Retrieve saved files.

Understand the parts of a program window: the Title Bar, Tool Bar, Menu Bar, Scroll Bar, and Location (Address Bar).

Become familiar with using a database by locating books, authors, and quizzes in the Accelerated Reader/library program.

Create and edit documents in a writing processor. Change fonts, sizes, and alignment. Rearrange text. Insert and edit graphics, word wrap, insert tables, create bulleted and numbered lists, alphabetize lists, word count, spell and grammar check (full and individual w/ right-click), create Word Art and drawing objects. Use the undo button!

Cut, copy, and paste via the menu bar (Edit), keyboard shortcuts, and a right-click.

Use a digital camera.

Use a Paint program. Use the selection tool to copy and paste.

Set wallpaper and screen savers. Understand the difference and purposes of each.

Determine what information is needed and how to access the Internet for online research. Find particular information on the Internet by specific URL, searching, bookmarks (favorites), keywords, following links, and the history menu.
Become familiar with the browser's menu bar and tool bar.

Understand how various computer programs can be used to communicate. Use e-mail to send, receive, reply, and forward. Create and use an address book and nicknames. Send attached documents and/or graphics. Use instant message. Practice rules of netiquette.

Print. Print part of a document. Print a graphic only from a web site. Use Print Preview to avoid mistakes.

Understand the concept of e-commerce. Make online purchases using Computer Lab Bucks.

Create a multi-media presentation using text, graphics, and audio.

Download and install. Understand that it is a 2-step process. Download then install fonts into the correct folder so they can be used in various programs.

Diagnose and correct minor, common computer problems.

Correctly use technology terms. Know the meanings of the buzz words listed on our site and correctly use them in conversation.
